    Thoughts on “Spider-Man: Homecoming”

Spider-Man Homecoming art by Ryan Meinerding
When it was announced that Spider-Man would join the MCU, I was one of those people who got super excited. There had been too many memes circulating the internet about how poor Peter Parker didn’t get to join the Avengers. When the news broke that Sony and Marvel were teaming up to create a new Spidey movie series as well as make Spidey join the Avengers, I was so happy and over the moon. But then the honeymoon phase was over and came the worries that this new Spider-Man man would not be as good as the first one (the one played by Tobey Maguire) or be as a mess as the second one (the one with Andrew Garfield). So I waited. Then, surprise! It was good!

Unlike the first two series, Spider-Man: Homecoming doesn’t tell us in details how Peter got his powers. The film opens with Peter Parker on his way to Berlin to join Iron-Man’s side on that Civil War climax scene and its aftermath, when Tony Starks tells him that he will keep in touch and assigns Happy as their middleman. But then days go by and Tony hasn’t contacted Peter yet. His life goes on; school, hanging out with friends, and catching bad guys around his neighbourhood. He keeps trying to contact Tony but without success. One night he sees two men in the middle of a weapon trade. The weapon is high tech and obviously dangerous. He goes on to investigate them, even goes so far as following them onto a ferry ship, where everything goes wrong and he has to be saved by Iron-Man. Iron-Man tells him to stop investigating the weapon and causing harm to innocent people. He also takes the Spider-Man’s suit. This leaves Peter devastated. He returns to his normal life and takes Liz (his crush) to the homecoming dance. But on the night of the dance he discovers the secret behind the man who invents the advanced weapons. It’s a plot twist you wouldn’t see coming and it’s SO GOOD! (I won’t tell you, obviously.)

Homecoming is another small-scale movie in the MCU, after Ant-Man. The story is very ‘teenage-y’ and no city destroyed, only small parts of it blown. It’s refreshing to have one light movie in between all these kaboom-kaboom-cities-destroyed-innocent-people-are-killed movies. Is it better than the previous two series? Oh yes, absolutely! Like I said before, this movie is very teenager and the casts are suitable for playing high school students. The casts are also very diversed without putting any stereotype. I like that. We need that right now.

So if you haven’t seen Homecoming yet, there’s still a chance for you as it’s still showing in your local cinemas. Go watch it!

  • Wonder Woman Movie Review

Wonder Woman Movie Review | Hola Darla
You might have been already sick of me saying how I don’t like DC and how I’m more of a Marvel kind of girl. Remember how I fell asleep while in the movie theater watching Dawn of Justice? No, wait, I didn’t write a review for Dawn of Justice, did I? Well, I guess no one is surprised that I enjoyed Wonder Woman, though. Yes, that’s right. Wonder Woman is the first movie in the DCEU that didn’t make me yawn. Not even once. Well done, ladies!
Wonder Woman Movie Review | Hola Darla
Set during the World War I, Wonder Woman is the best back story of a superhero so far (yep, even compared to those of Marvel’s). Diana has been training her whole life to fight, but she lives in a peaceful, tropical island of Themyscira, so that made me wonder why and how she ends up fighting in the WWI. Turns out, Themyscira is located not too far from the war zone and is actually invisible in the middle of the sea unless you come sailing (or flying) right into the territory. Steve Trevor, an American spy working for the Brits, flies in a small plane and crashes into the sea near the coast of Themyscira. Luckily, Diana spots him as she is running from her mother while crying near a cliff on the beach (cheesy yet classy LOL). She saves him from drowning, but the fleet that is pursuing him soon arrives at the beach and a fight breaks between the German soldiers and the Amazons. The Amazons kill all of the soldiers and Steve is brought to the palace and interrogated using the Lasso of Truth (kind of like Veritaserum but more practical). He tells them about the war. Diana believes that the war is caused by Ares (the god of war). She steals the Godkiller sword and leaves Themyscira with Steve. Believing that Ares disguises himself as a German general, Ludendorff, Diana goes to the front line, accompanied by her squad (#squadgoals, everyone!)

Okay. At this point, you must have heard a lot of good things about Wonder Woman, so I don’t even know how to put it. I just… really, really love this movie! I had high hopes before watching it because everyone on Twitter said it was gonna be awesome, and also everything about Wonder Woman screams “GIRL POWER!” and “FEMINISM!” and you know what? It is good. It is awesome. I won’t compare it again to the previous movies in DCEU because it won’t do them justice; heck, I won’t even compare it to any other movies because Wonder Woman is in a whole different league. Everything else will find it hard to compete because Wonder Woman has set the bar sky high (I’m looking at you, Marvel!)

So, if you haven’t watched it… why? It’s the greatest thing that’s ever happened to the mankind. You don’t want to miss it. Go watch it! Go, go, go!

  • Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Review

Due to me and my husband living in different cities now, it has become quite hard for us to go to movie premieres. I had planned to go visit him on the premiere day of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 so we could watch together, but life happened and we ended up watching it on the weekend. It was fine, though, because our country got to see the movie earlier than most of other countries (including the US), so I still think that’s a win(?)

So anyway… In this second installment of the Guardians of the Galaxy, the team is already fully established as ‘the guardians’. At the beginning of the movie, they are on a mission of protecting the Sovereign’s batteries from a monster who is trying to stole them. They succeed and in turn of their service, the Sovereign hand Nebula over to them. She had become a prisoner after trying to steal the batteries. The Guardians then flee, but unbeknownst to the rest of them, Rocket stole some of the batteries. On their way home, they are attacked by the Sovereign’s fleet but they are saved by a stranger. Turns out, the stranger is Peter Quill’s estranged father, Ego the Living Planet. He asks Peter to come home with him to his planet. Peter is skeptic at first, but Gamora convinces him, so Peter, Gamora, and Drax go with Ego while Rocket, Baby Groot, and Nebula are left to fix their broken ship. The Sovereign is still looking for them and they recruit Yondu and his crew to find the Guardians. But then Yondu’s crew betray him and a mutiny breaks out. Yondu, Rocket, Baby Groot, and Kraglin (one of Yondu’s loyal men) team up to escape, while the rest of the Guardians find out who Ego really is and what he really wants.

While Volume 2 is not a huge disappointment, I honestly still like Volume 1 much better. This movie suffers from the ‘personal story’ syndrome, something that has become quite a trend lately (I read about it somewhere but can’t find the link to the article). The visual effects, the jokes, and the characters are perfect, but the story is a little bit off. Also, I haven’t read any Guardians of the Galaxy comic books, but I’ve read in a forum discussion that Peter Quill’s father in the comic books is not Ego the Living Planet, so maybe I should find out why the writer decided so. And I’m very curious how the Guardians will fit in the upcoming Avengers movie! Anybody else feels the same way?

All in all, I’m giving this movie 4 out of 5 stars.

  • Rogue One: A Star Wars Story Movie Review

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story | Hola Darla

Rogue One hasn’t even been in the cinema for one week and yet I have seen it twice. TWICE! That’s how obsessed I am. That’s how awesome it is. That’s how wonderful it is to be alive in this era; an era in which we get one Star Wars movie each year.

That’s why no matter how I try, I don’t think this post will be spoiler-free. I’M STILL TOO EXCITED!

As I said in the previous post, I knew next to nothing about Rogue One before watching it on its premier date. Turns out, it wasn’t a big deal at all. When I went to watch it for the second time, I brought along my little sister who hasn’t watched any Star Wars movie. She asked a few questions during the movie, but overall the story is very easy to follow.

Rogue One was based on that one line in the crawl at the opening of A New Hope. It tells a story about how the Rebellions get a hold on the Death Star plans. It also explains why Death Star has a ridiculous flaw in its design. One of the scientists who help to build the Death Star is Galen Erso. At the beginning of the movie, he was living in hiding with his family, but he was caught. His wife was killed and his young daughter escaped. He surrendered then agreed to work on the Death Star. He intentionally put that flaw as a revenge. When the Death Star is almost finished, he sends a message to Saw Gerrera and his daughter, Jyn Erso, telling them about the flaw. She then sets off on a mission to steal the plan from the Empire’s data bank (or sort of; I forget the name lol). They successfully get the plan and transmit it to the Rebellions before they… *SPOILER!!!!* are blown up by the Death Star, along with the whole planet. The movie ends with Darth Vader chases after the rebels who retrieve the plans then hand them to (young!) Princess Leia; just a few minutes before the opening scene of A New Hope. (I’m not gonna talk about how I squealed like a little girl when I saw young Princess Leia.)

Saying this movie is amazing is perhaps a great understatement. Because it’s beyond amazing. I’m mesmerised by how modern technology can make this movie possible, what with Tarkin and Leia, while also maintain silly low-tech things that we can see in the original trilogy, e.g. wired headphones. I also love how they kill everyone while also give each death a meaning. They all die for a better future. That last scene on the beach when Jyn and Cassian hug is so beautifully wrecking. We can see how deep their love for each other is; they just met, then they decided to trust & fight alongside each other.

Rogue One is 100% heartbreaking, yet you’ll love it. You will absolutely love it.

  • Things To Look Forward To For The Rest Of The Year

Things to Look Forward to for the Rest of the Year | Hola Darla
Ha! See what I did there with the title? “… For The Rest Of The Year” as if 2016 still had months to go. Well, knock on wood because 2016 has been a wild ride and it feels like the worst, longest year ever, both to the whole world and to me personally. I’m both eager and afraid of what 2017 will become. Part of me wants to be optimistic that 2017 will be a fresh, new start–a chance to correct all the mistakes I made in 2016; the other part of me keeps saying that 2017 is just literally one day after 2016 and I’m sure one whole year of mistakes won’t just change in one day.

However, December has a lot of good things to offer, apparently. There’s still a chance that 2016 won’t end badly. Perhaps it’ll end with a blast? I don’t know about you, but here are things that I look forward to for the rest of 2016.

    Sing

Sing Movie Still | Hola Darla
Sing is an animated movie from the same production house from which Despicable Me and Minions came. It’s a fable of a singing competition. I still haven’t known more information about the storyline, but it has become on my list since the first time I saw the teaser trailer a few months ago.

Kimi No Na Wa (Your Name)

Kimi No Na Wa (Your Name) by AssassinWarrior on Deviant Art
Have you heard about this Japanese animated movie? It has been released for quite some time now, but was just released yesterday in my country. It has been praised by critics and certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes, and it was also reported to have beaten Moana in the box office. The story is about two high school students who are strangers to each other but suddenly switch places. They have to find a way to adjust to the situation because the switch happens randomly.

    Sense8 Christmas Special

Lito and Hernando from Sense8 Christmas Special | Hola Darla
After waiting for more than a year, Sense 8 will finally come back on Netflix this month with a Christmas special on December 23. Read more about Sense8 here.

    Rogue One

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story | Hola Darla
We get a Star Wars movie every year. What a time to be alive, huh? Just like any other movies/series in this post, I hardly have a clue about Rogue One other than it’s about rebellion towards the empire. Fantastic Beasts has opened up my eyes about how refreshing it is to watch a movie with little to zero knowledge about the story. Thus I’ve drawn myself from researching before seeing Rogue One. Hahaha!

    Sherlock Series 4

Sherlock Series 4 | Hola Darla
I know, I know. Sherlock will technically come back on the New Year’s Day, but like I said above, it’s just one day after December 31 :p

How about you? Do you have anything to add to my list?
